Natural Patterns

This series of watercolour paintings was an investigation combining the properties of watercolours, various watercolour papers, various mark-making tools, and rules when using those tools. The methods are aimed at producing mathematically chaotic patterns that capture natural forms and textures.

These images formed part of an exhibition at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, UK in 2002. The exhibition also included quite a bit of text, looking at the natures of art and science and a questionnaire. The main aim of the exhibition was to encourage people to give their opinions and engage with the exhibits. Many thanks to all who took part, feedback can be found in the Further Thoughts section.

Each painting has secret text, to enable you to make up your own mind about what the paintings may represent before I give my perspective on where the patterns came from.
