About the Burwell and District Day Centre

As a local Registered Charity (No 1003439), Burwell and District Day Centre is not funded by any statutory body. We sell a given number of places per day to Social Services who make a quarterly payment to us. However, this by no means meets all the costs and overheads of running this very important and essential community resource. We are therefore heavily dependent upon fundraising efforts and the support of members and friends who make donations (often small but nevertheless critical to our funds).

The Centre was purpose built in 1989 and has continuously kept pace with changing and varying demands. In 2002 / 2003, we successfully raised £15000 to refurbish our kitchen and at the present time (March 2004) have seen the first phase of refurbishing the lounge and dining room completed.

In addition to a hot, freshly cooked main meal on five days of the week, the Centre also offers company and activity in congenial surroundings. A number of services are offered on a routine basis including

  • Weekly Hairdressing
  • Chiropody – 3 days per month
  • Assisted Showering in a purpose adapted shower room
  • Manicure
  • Mobile Library
  • Coffee, Tea and Lunch drop in facility
  • Small Charity Shop
  • Benefits Advice

The Centre owns and operates a specially adapted minibus to carry members to and from the Centre on a daily basis. The minibus is also used for supervised outings and as a resource for the local community.

The local surgery is supportive and will respond to provide routine or emergency treatment at the Centre. District Nurses make regular appointments at the Centre for patients who may otherwise have to wait at home for a visit, thereby forfeiting a hot meal and often equally essential social contact.

Burwell and District Day Centre is guided by an executive committee who operate voluntarily, and a small number of paid staff perform the day to day running of the Centre.

A very valuable contribution comes from local volunteers who assist with

  • Preparation, serving and clearing away of lunch
  • Serving hot drinks etc
  • Driving the minibus
  • Meal Deliveries

We extend a warm welcome to you all and look forward to seeing you
