My name was Cynthia Kingdon when I was evacuated to Burwell with my brother, John, at the beginning of the 1940s. We lived with a very kind couple called Ted and Lily Irons at what was then No. 3 Newmarket Road but which I think is now No. 128. For many years afterwards Mrs Irons and I kept in contact and I visited Burwell too, also with my husband. When he died in 1981, Mrs Irons wrote to me every week with kind, encouraging words to help me through my bereavement. I am now so delighted to have found this Guestbook where I can tell the people of Burwell, especially anybody there who might remember me, e.g. Mr & Mrs Irons’ son, Peter, that I shall never forget the kindness shown to me during those tender years spent among you as a young child.

In 2010 I stayed at a local camping site so that I could spend some time walking in the footsteps of my Ancestors who are deeply rooted in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk I have traced my tree back over 1000years I will be back again.

Hi

My grandfather Frederick Rigley married Rosetta Warren of Burwell in Ipswich. He died in London but originated in Nottingham. She died in Newmarket registration district in 1977. I never knew my grandfather and wondered if anyone had any history regarding Rosetta. Coincidentally we are now living in Cambridgeshire.

I was born in Burwell in 1946 in one of the little thatched cottages in the High Street. A Mrs Grainger the village photographer lived in one of these also and she was a great historian who had many photographs of the village and inhabitants. My great grandparents' name was Warren, and they lived in Ness Road [I think]. We came to New Zealand when I was 5. My mum and dad were Bert and Gwen Martin, and he was the son of Tom Martin who married Florence Warren. Everybody's up and died now, except my mother Gwen Martin, who is 89 next week. Great to see so many names I recognise on this page. Maybe one day before I pop my clogs I will see Burwell again!

Late 1979 I found myself stationed at RAF Mildenhall and moved into a flat on Grantchester Rise. Thanks to the friendly people of Burwell I grew to love England so much that my two year assignment ended up being nine years. I miss it very much to this day. Thank You to the Millers, the Fullers, the Huggins. The biggest Thank You to the Kytes. I still think of you as "Mum and Dad" and love you both just as much as my own parents. I wonder how you manage without me there to make the mustard.

I was born in Burwell in 1944 and lived in the village to 1963. Since leaving, my thoughts have often turned to two local scenes from that time. They are the barge that was beached alongside the Lode in the vicinity of the old fertiliser works and the threshing machine which for many years stood at the village end of the First (Newnham?) Drove. I would be interested to hear from anyone who knows if there is a photographic record of either or both of those two relics from the village's past.

Is any 'body' still with us who attended the school on Silver Street in 1941 -2? And remembers the troops billeted at Briarwood across the street- I was caned daily by Headmistress Miss Sprake for scrounging lunch with them - and whacked by P.C. Good for scrumping apples. We were Londoners, lived at 3 Toyse Lane and left at the end of the war but I have fond memories of a wartime Burwell boyhood. I had a great collection of incendiary bomb fins collected from the fields after raids and army badges - my proudest a red 'Desert rat' given me by a soldier who still had sand in his kit. My best mates were Eric Ware and George Fuller both lived on Ness Road. Have either of them made it this far?

From what I have found so far is that they moved from Burwell to Rockdale, Milam County, Texas, USA around 1873. I am curious as to why they moved and anything I can find out would be wonderful. Are there any of the Diver family still living there? Does anyone remember any of them? Sounds like Burwell is a wonderful place. Thank you for any information anyone may have.
