After falling in love with Burwell my son and his wife have bought a house in Orchard Way and we wish them all the luck in the world. They are so pleased to be living in Burwell at long last. I am writing this from Lt. Cornard near Sudbury, Suffolk. Good luck Peter and Carol from the family.

I was a American Navy pilot stationed at Mildenhall. I lived in Burwell from late 1979 to 1981. I lived on Toyse Lane and used to visit the Fox pub. The folks I had the privilege to meet in Burwell were outstanding...some of the best I ever met in my life. God bless Burwell and the U.K. JTA (John the American)

Response to previous entry

1) young families/ facilities? I suggest you browse this site for more information - See Community > Groups, Youth > Groups etc.
2) job oppurtunities? Most folk probably commute to Cambridge, but Newmarket, Ely and Bury st Edmunds are all within reasonable distance. It's a fast growing area with low unemployment
3) how long by car to cambridge? Depends when you go and where you go in Cambridge. Takes me about 20 minutes getting in, 25 getting home.
4) where is the nearest supermarket? The village has a medium-sized Co-Op. Tescos is about 4 miles Waitrose about 5, both in Newmarket
5) clubs for children, ie brownies etc.? Yes, again browsing / searching this site should help answer most of your questions.
6) what is the public transport service like? Bus to Cambridge is half hourly, I believe Newmarket is hourly, but they take quite a while
7) care / residential home? 'Ash Grove' offers sheltered accomodation in the village. (See here for more information). For residential care there is Hilton Park in Bottisham about 6 miles away.
The village has expanded a great deal in the last 20 years and continues to do so. There are many newcomers and folk that do not qualify as Burwellians, so you won't be alone and shouldn't feel too intimidated.
Of course it won't help those first time buyers who were brought up in the village and who can no longer afford to live here as more people move in and push up prices further, but this is happening across the country in this wonderful economy of ours.
Hope this helps.

We are seriously considering moving to Burwell within the next 18 months - a new addition to the family, means that we need to move up the ladder a little - howerever house prices in Bishops Stortford, Herts are soo high that it will be near impossible for us to buy a 3 bed house here. We have accepted that we are going to have to move out, and when thinking of which areas to consider, we remembered a passing visit to Burwell just last year. We were struck by how friendly everyone was, and how beautiful the village was (although we didnt get to see it all) we stopped for a drink at a pub (cant remember the name) there was some sort of fete thing going on . we have looked at right move and can thankfully afford a 3 bed house in burwell, however coming from a large town so close to london, we are nervous about making such a move . We're worried that we will not be welcomed as "outsiders", also I have noticed from these posts, that so many people seem to move away - could someone please answer these few questions, which may help us to decide if burwell is a village we could consider moving to

1) do you have many young families living there, with the relevant faicilities
2) are there job oppurtunities there or would i have to travel further affield - and if so, where do most people commute to
3) how long by car to cambridge
4) where is the nearest supermarket
5) are there clubs for children, ie brownies etc
6) what is the public transport service like
7) is there a care / residential home locally

hope someone can answer those questions for me - it would be most helpful

it would be great to hear from other "outsiders" did they find it hard settling into village life etc

many thanks
Tara x

These are the details copied from the 1881 census which appears to match your ancestors exactly.
It looks a bit muddled as the listing is in columns which don't format properly on this page.
I'll send you the file if you wish and also the link to get to it yourself.

I would be most grateful if anyone could provide any information regarding one of your past inhabitants. It is Joseph William Bentley born in Burwell in 1860 and is reputed to have married Eliza Hoyle at Ely Cathedral but that may be wishful thinking. She was born at Stuntney in 1860 and they had 7 children and I am descended from one of them. If you can help please contact me through the e-mail address and I will respond.

Hi
I came across this site whilst researching my family history.

I remember Burwell very well as a child in the 1960's as our family used to visit my Aunt & Uncle- Tom & Ivy Elis who lived at the Barber's shop- They also used to run a newsagents from there and had a son called Albert
Ivy's mum Rose JOHNSON nee BEARD and my Nan, Annie WALKER nee BEARD were sisters from LODE

Many years later my sister married David ALEXANDER who used to have his hair cut by Uncle Tom!

They were the life and soul of any party and Ivy could tell some really risque jokes accompanied by a raucous cackle. Tom always had hankies in his trouser pockets and when they visited us in Baldock, Herts, my sisters and I always struck lucky by checking the chair Tom sat in and retrieving lots of loose change!

I miss them both

Hi, The pictures of Burwell looking from St.Mary's tower are great. In the current one we can see our old house in Spring Close with the meadow behind it, our daughters Julie and Tracey spent many happy hours playing there. We lived in that house for 31 years from 1967-1998 had wonderful neighbours, friends and the fondest memories of Burwell.
Hello and best wishes to all who remember us.

1. Is Burwell on 2Mb broadband yet? Yes, you can have at least up to 3MB
2. Can you get Freeview okay? Yes, no problems.
3. Have you got wheelie bins yet? No, but we have black bins for recycling glass and tins. Paper sacks for paper and cardboard and there are several plastic recycling collection bins in the village. There is also a compost scheme.
Hope this helps...

Hi, we used to live in Burwell about 9 years ago and might be moving back later this year from Cumbria. I'm really interested in finding out some of the basics such as:
1. Is Burwell on 2Mb broadband yet? I don't think I can live without it!
2. Can you get Freeview okay? We have the best freeview signal in the country here, all the channels from a small set top aerial, I'd hate to give up all our digiboxes.
3. Have you got wheelie bins yet? I just hate having to use that old fashioned black sack system, not only does it make the concept of preserving the environment & recycling a joke, it's also smelly and encourages rats etc.
We'd love to move back to Burwell but must admit that Newmarket seems a preferred option on 1. and 3. above at least. If anyone has any idea about those questions, I'd be really happy to get them by email if you don't want to publish on here.
Excellent site!

I lived in Burwell during my High School Years. My Dad was in the United States Air Force stationed at Mildenhall. Our Neighbors, who are still there by the way, were the Hennings. Harry and Janet, who, being kids impressed with everything English called them "Sir Harold and Lady Janet". I just got nostalgic tonight and seeing the little town I loved as a kid made me cry. Many, many good memories there.

Am trying to trace any relatives of a friend who lives in New York.
Her father was born and raised in Burwell - name of Gordon Basil HAWES. His father's name was Basil Butler HAWES who married Florence Webb.
If anyone recognises these names, please will you e-mail me (e-mail address above) so that I can pass the message(s) on to Gordon's daughter, Carol.
She would be ecstatic to know that there are relatives over here in the UK.
Thank you.

I did a Google search on my family name and the first entry was this site. It would be most interesting to visit this part of England some day. My past visits have been limited to London and Berkshire. Incidentally, I am a U.S. citizen and reside in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (Minneapolis/St. Paul) in Minnesota. My father's side of the family has resided in the U.S. for generations. I'm not sure what part of England my paternal ancestors came from. It appears to be a rather common name in the UK. I even took notice of a toponym called the Burwell Copse near the village of Wokingham in Berkshire.

Just dicovered your web-site! My interest being that I lived in Burwell for approx;1 year during WW2. My late mother was housekeeper at the Vicarage. Can anybody recall the name of the Canon in residence then? I recall the vicarage very well and a summer garden party there. I attanded the old 2 room school briefly, and the excitement of waving to the military conveys coming thro' the village. These plus many more memories, albiet war-time, are days I fondly recall of Burwell.

My daughter and her husband were stationed in England from 1982-85. The lived in Burwell for about 1 year before moving to Mildenhall Air Force Base. They lived in a section of the big house just behind the church and cemetary. I visited there for a month and fell in love with your beautiful little villiage. I think of it often and long to go back.

Hi, in the mid 80's in lived in Newmarket, but my best friend lived in Burwell (Gail Rogerson) so I spent many a day in Burwell and loved it. I am now trying to track down a lad I worked with in Newmarket, who went to work (factory) and lived in Burwell. I and a friend Nic are coming to Newmarket in August and would love to meet up with him if he is still in the Burwell area. Any info please e-mail me. Thanks.

I have just registered my interest in Broadband for Burwell at the BTOpen website, which makes me voter 207 towards our trigger number of 500. It took a minute to do, I simply typed in my name, address, BT phone number and an email address so I can be informed when enough people have voted, and again to indicate a date when the telephone exchange is to be upgraded.

Since Bob's post in the Forum in Nov 2003, an additional 35 people have voted, not bad for a couple of months. It only takes 500 villagers to show an interest and we will automatically be upgraded to Broadband, making the Internet faster, more accessible, and freeing the home telephone line for incoming calls.

I would encourage Burwellians to press this issue forward: have a word with your family members, friends and neighbours! Let's vote for Burwell!

I lived in Burwell in the late 1990 and early 1991 months. We lived on High street in a lovely home owned by Peter and John. My daughter, Aimee, went to school held in the old church at the end of town. I believe Mrs. Crouch was the headmistress of the school. We returned to the California with such fond memories of England, its people and of our home in Burwell. Hope to return someday.
